Low testosterone, or hypogonadism, affects an estimated 4 to 5 million men in the United States.
It is under diagnosed and under treated because the symptoms are mostly attributed to aging or ignored by patients and physicians. Only about 5% of patients with low testosterone are treated with testosterone replacement therapy. That number needs to increase.
The following are associated with low testosterone:
Our goal at The Full Life Health Center is to help you get your life back without any hindrance where help is possible.
The normal total testosterone level is between 300 ng/dL to 1,000 ng/dL. Ranges differ from lab to lab and are based off population averages. A 30-year-old male with a level of 350 ng/dL is considered to be in the "normal range". If this 30-year-old male has symptoms consistent with low testosterone, the testosterone replacement therapy could be beneficial in improving quality of life.
Another issue with testosterone levels is that the "total" testosterone number is used to begin treatment in many medical practices. We take into consideration your "free" testosterone levels. The amount of testosterone available for use in your body can be affected by proteins that bind the testosterone in your blood stream. The amount of free testosterone plus the testosterone that is bound is considered your "total" testosterone and this is actually what your body uses.
For treatment to start, we take into consideration the individual's symptoms in addition to lab values. After a comprehensive history and physical examination, we test both total and free testosterone. In addition, we test full hormonal, metabolic, and hematologic profile to get a gull picture of your health status. Treatment can begin immediately if your symptoms are consistent with low testosterone.
Low testosterone treatment is individualized. It does not follow a "one glove fits all" approach. Treatment is based on presenting symptoms, testosterone levels, desired fertility, estrogen levels, and other factors that may be discussed during the initial visit and follow up visits.
Here are the available treatment options:
The risks and benefits of each type of testosterone optimization treatment modality will be discussed in detail prior to starting.
Depending on other factors, additional accessory treatment with TRT includes:
Testosterone replacement therapy is the treatment of choice for most patients. Testosterone replacement therapy can restore testosterone levels to the optimal range and help reverse common symptoms of aging in men.
Testosterone is administered either through injections or topical creams based on patient preference, finances, and desired outcomes.
Our treatment of choice is a twice a week subcutaneous injection. These are typically injected into the abdominal fat. It is very easy and usually painless! Many men learn how to do this during the first visit.
Throughout treatment, individuals will have routine lab work to ensure treatment efficacy and safety. We schedule follow up visits every 3 months until your levels are optimized. We also want to follow up regularly to ensure you are having no side effects. For example, estrogen levels can increase in some men during testosterone replacement. We address this type of issue before bothersome symptoms develop so we can optimize treatment and get you back to your Full Life again.
